Tour in support of #1 R&B album, MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL

8-week, 19-city tour preceded by New Year's Eve kick-off at Madison Square Garden –The World's Most Famous Arena!

For Mariah Carey's legions of North American fans, the long wait is over – as the international superstar announces her first major tour itinerary in over three years. Following a festive New Year's Eve kick-off at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the "Angels Advocate" Tour begins January 2, 2010, at the Borgata in Atlantic City, and wraps up February 27th at The Pearl Concert Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Honey B. Fly, the official Mariah Carey Fan Club, will be offering exclusive member pre-sales for all show dates. Fans can get details on the official website, MariahCarey.com. Tickets for the majority of the tour will go on sale December 19th.

The 8-week, 19-city "Angels Advocate" Tour is the first major tour by Mariah Carey since The "Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour" of August through October 2006. The opening act on the "Angels Advocate" Tour will be RydazNrtist, a new R&B group signed to Nick Cannon's NCredible Entertainment.

MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, Mariah Carey's 12th studio album, follows her multi-platinum E=MC² (2008), and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005). The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemp orary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. Three years later, "Touch My Body" (from E=MC²) became her 18th #1 Hot 100 hit, surpassing Elvis Presley's previous record of 17 #1 Hot 100 Hits. Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits. The success of E=MC² brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 175 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.

Mariah's "Memoirs" Remix Album Due February 2010

Amidst rumours of a possible split from her label, Mariah Carey’s ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’ remix album will be arriving in stores in February 2010. The news was confirmed today by the diva’s manager Chris Lighty via his official twitter page. An all-star list of Hip-Hop/R&B acts have been lined up for the project including Big Boi, R. Kelly, Trey Songz, T-Pain, Jodeci, Gucci Mane and Jermaine Dupri. The original version of ‘Memoirs…’ has thus far shipped an underwhelming 325,000 copies in the US.

Mariah Set To Leave Island Def Jam?

As a result of the lackluster reception of ‘Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel’, and Mariah Carey’s indignation with the handling of the record, sources close to That Grape Juice have informed us that the songbird may just be ready to take flight to a new label. There is reliable word that Carey has been at logger-heads with label-head LA Reid for several months now.

The 39-year old diva has been signed to the Island Def Jam Music Group since 2002. The terms of the singer’s deal entail a minimum of 3 albums for the grand total of 22.5 million dollars, with her being named a joint partner with the Universal Music Group. Carey’s first LP released under the agreement was 2002’s ‘Charmbracelet’ which was followed by the 6x platinum ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, ‘E=MC²’ and Memoirs…, which was released on September 29th 2009.

If Carey decides to leave IDJ, I will not be shocked. The promotional efforts behind ‘Memoirs…’ reflect less than half of the energy that the label placed into the ‘Emancipation’ project. Has anyone else noticed that she has barely taken any new promotional pictures for this record with the exception of her single covers and the album booklet? Add that to Carey’s criticism’s of ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’ being chosen as a single in place of ‘H.A.T.E.U.’, and it’s easy to understand why she might be preparing to ditch the label.

It is no secret that several labels have been itching to sign Carey since she left Virgin Records in 2001. Clive Davis (Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson) at J Records, for instance, tried to get her to join his team. The real question is: should Carey leave IDJ, where would she fit in? I personally think that her best move would be to go back to Sony, where she would be able to get the attention and funding she deserves; a plausible option now that ex-husband Tommy Mottola is no longer with the company. Either way, with a rare talent like hers, she would be an invaluable addition to any label’s lineup.

InStyle: Mariah & Nick: They Belong Together

From the December 2009 issue of InStyle magazine.

On a jaunt to the Maldives, the pop diva and her husband once again tell each other "I'll Be There"

When singer Mariah Carey wed America's Got Talent host Nick Cannon in 2008 at her house in the Bahamas, they promised to renew their vows every year. For their first anniversary they flew five friends to the One & Only Reethy Rah resort in the Maldives. As a gift, Cannon, 29, gave Carey, 40, three custom rings to match her original pink diamond engagement one, but that wasn't the only step up. "The first time, everybody was nervous. We didn't tell anybody, and I got there late, as usual," says the singer, who co-stars in Precious. "But the second time, on this sandbar in the ocean, everything was incredible." The couple are already planning next year's ceremony with even more friends at their new Bel-Air mansion.

Carey and Cannon (in a Balenciaga suit) chose to renew their vows in the Maldives because "we both love exotic places and traveling together," she says. The ceremony was presided over by a minister, under a floral arch. "It was romantic," Carey says.

Carey liked the neckline and simplicity of the Roberto Cavalli dress. She wore a sheer veil over her naturally curly hair. "At the last minute, I said, 'OK, I'll wear a veil,'" she says. "Why not? You're getting married!"

Usually I'd get a more elaborate cake," says Carey of the heart-adorned creation. "But this was a really nice one."

"I don't really eat cake, but I had a very small piece that night," says Carey. Cannon, however, is another story. "He can eat whatever he wants."

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" Dance Remix

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was the leading single from Mariah's 1994 Merry Christmas album, selling 11 million copies worldwide on its way to becoming one of the best selling Christmas albums of all time! In December of 2007, it became the first ringtone to be certified platinum with sales of over 1 million, and will top 2 million this year.

Written by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff, it is the only original Holiday song written by a contemporary artist to be considered a "classic," and continues to top radio play and sales charts every year during the Holidays.

Upon the fifteen year anniversary, it was time to put a new twist on this Mariah Holiday classic with a brand new dance remix. Mariah's New Dance Mix of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was produced and overseen by Mariah herself, and re-mixed by Joey Arbagey, and you are hearing it first at AOL's PopEater!

The digital single and ringtone will be available everywhere starting November 23.

PRECIOUS In Theaters TODAY!!

PRECIOUS, the critically acclaimed and award winning film by Lee Daniels is out in select theaters TODAY Friday, November 6, 2009.

Don't miss out on "one of the most important films of this generation" (AOL Black Voices) - Find a theater near you, check showtimes and buy tickets today!

Oprah Winfrey ("this film left me breathless... it split me wide open") and Tyler Perry ("it has the ability and power to change lives") in association with Lionsgate present PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE, starring Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz and introduces Gabourey Sidibe.

Set in Harlem in 1987, PRECIOUS is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She's pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo'Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn't know the meaning of "alternative," but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

PRECIOUS was in Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival - Un Certain Regard, and winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. The film was also the centerpiece of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival Gala Presentation on September 12, 2009, where it received the festival's 2009 Cadillac People's Choice Award. PRECIOUS is the only film ever to receive the Audience awards at both Sundance and Toronto. PRECIOUS has been selected as the 2009 New York Film Festival Centerpiece.

PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome. Get your tickets today at precioustickets.com!

Critics talk about PRECIOUS...

"'Precious' is courageous and uncompromising, a shaken cocktail of debasement and elation, despair and hope. Everyone involved deserves credit for creating a movie so dangerous, problematic and ultimately elevating." - John Anderson, Variety

"It is raw, electrically charged, heart-rending and completely shattering." - Rex Reed, The New York Observer

"See it as soon as you can!" - A.O Scott, At The Movies

"'Precious' leaves you moved like no film in years. It has a spirit that soars" - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"'Precious' simply cannot be missed" - Mary Corliss, TIME

"You feel you've witnessed nothing less than the birth of a soul" - Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"In a striking non-star turn, Mariah Carey is credible as a veteran social worker who is jarred by Precious' plight." - Hollywood Reporter

"Among the many delightful surprises in the film is Mariah Carey, who is pitch-perfect as a welfare counselor and serves as this demi-tragedy's Greek chorus. It's possible that many viewers won't recognize her until the final credits, but like so many things about "Precious," the performance is disarming." - Variety

"Precious is great American cinema" - The Associated Press

On its way to the Oscars...

Mariah Carey Preps ‘Memoirs’ Features Album, R. Kelly on Board

It’s hard to please everyone, but Mariah Carey is setting out to do just that with a retooled version of her latest album, and she’s brought along some famous friends. After we broke the news of the songbird’s plans to remix Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Tricky Stewart filled us in on a few more details.

The “Obsessed” producer wouldn’t quite categorize the work in progress as a remix album. “They’ve said that it’s a remix album, but really what it is is a features album. [The songs] won’t necessarily be remixed,” Tricky once again told Rap-Up.com. “It’s just an album of features, really cool features on the exact same album.”

According to Tricky, 90 percent of the record will contain a featured guest, while there’s a small possibility of one or two all-new tracks. The as-yet-untitled project will go by the Memoirs title. “It will be the same name, but it will probably have something to it. I’m not sure what they’re going to call it, but it’s the same album.”

The goal is to appeal to all of Carey’s fans. “We wanted to do an album that was really personal, and if you love Mariah Carey, you can put it on and listen to it all day,” began Tricky, “but at the same time, if you like the hot Mariah when she’s doing the features, we want to give people that option too, so that they can put on whichever one they choose.”

So far the lineup looks promising with T-Pain Auto-Tuning on “Candy Bling,” the Southern hip-hop trio of Big Boi, Gucci Mane, and OJ Da Juiceman rapping on “H.A.T.E.U.,” and Trey Songz crooning on “Inseparable.” Tricky also revealed to Rap-Up.com that R. Kelly appears on the opening cut “Betcha Gon’ Know.”

No release date has been set for the project.

Mariah Covers In Touch Magazine

After years of personal and professional struggles, things are finally going Mariah Carey's way. She's got a highly-anticipated, new album about to hit stores, a buzz-worthy role in the film 'Precious,' and she and husband Nick Cannon have discussed starting a family. Carey is glad for for her second wind, admitting to In Touch, "Honestly, I never thought I'd live this long."

She adds, "I have always been grateful for everything I had, but my personal life was a mess. So many artists just exist for their careers and then burn out quickly. That was me before I met Nick, and he helped me. I always thought that I wouldn't be here at this point. I was thinking, 'Okay, I've got another year of my life left. This has got to be the end of it.' Finally, he was like, "Stop talking like that."

The singer/songwriter, who will turn 40 on her next birthday, thinks the milestone is paid too much attention in Hollywood. "I find it offensive," she explains. "It unfairly taints women in particular, and makes people look at you differently. I lived with that my whole life."

Before Nick, she says, her own preoccupation was worse. "I have been obsessed with the whole Marilyn Monroe thing my whole life - all those artists who died young," she says. "Michael Jackson. At one point, we talked about that stuff. I can't reveal what he thought. But yes, we had a conversation about it once."

With her happy marriage, Carey's focus is now family. While Cannon claims two kids are the goal, Carey says, "Of course, we'd be happy with one. I want to be able to manage the right amount of attention. We are so busy - if you have six kids running around, no one gets what they need. Kids need a lot of attention."

Cannon reveals, "It's at the forefront of our minds. We're very close."

Mariah Carey: The smitten newlywed on her new album

Mariah Carey has sold more than 160 million albums worldwide, and, if radio play for the first single on her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, is any indication, she's on the verge of racking up more No. 1 hits than the Beatles. But underneath the pop varnish, Carey's just a smitten newlywed in the middle of a home renovation, juggling a job and a new puppy. Sort of...

Congratulations on the album! Can you describe the new sound?
Each song is its own snapshot of a moment in a story. But overall, the vibe is R&B hip-hop with a lot of slow jams.

What kind of mood were you in when you wrote the album?
Each song has its own mood; some flow seamlessly into each other, and that was the purpose, and others are very different. The album has a sense of humor you can hear me laughing out loud at certain points but it also has deep and introspective moments.

Is there a track that holds special meaning for you?
Since I write almost all my songs, they all do. But a song like "The Impossible" is very much where my life is right now because I am actually in love for the first time.

Congratulations on celebrating your one-year wedding anniversary with Nick Cannon. How's married life?
Amazing, better every day.

How do you two spend your free time?
We travel a lot. I think we've been to over 35 cities already.

Did Nick weigh in on the album?
We tend to do our own thing, but I did like sharing the process of this album with him, as we have the same taste in music and he's a great DJ and loves music.

You just bought a house in L.A. What's it like?
It's a Georgian manor. We basically redid the entire thing, from the floors to landscaping to the closets, which are inspired by my New York apartment, with a men's and women's department store-esque feeling! Of course, I have the salon and Nick has a basketball court, which is his favorite place in the house. And I love having the outdoor space so the dogs can play. It's not too small; it's not too big; it's not a monstrosity. It's a home.

Are you permanently moving to L.A.?
No, I'm bicoastal and always have been. When I came to L.A., I just used to stay in hotels or rented homes.

You've been looking great lately. How do you stay in shape?
When I want to lose weight, I'll avoid carbs and anything fried. I eat mostly soups with protein, and drink lots of water and chamomile tea.

You love your Jack Russell terriers. How's your puppy, Cha-Cha?
She's adorable. Nick got her for me as a present, but she loves me the best! She sleeps in the bed with me when Nick goes to work. And she gets along with Jack Junior, aka JJ, my other dog. We want to breed them!

So, now that you're happily married and have completed yet another album, do you think you'll ever take a break?
I've been doing a lot of other interesting things, which I'm super excited about, like filming Precious. It's an incredible movie by Lee Daniels, inspired by the novel Push, written by Sapphire. I read it a long time ago, and it changed my life. Everyone should read it.

Forget for a moment that you're an international superstar. How would you describe yourself?
Hmmm... festive, emotional, creative, "artsy," a jokestress.

How often do you think about music? Is it always in your head?
Constantly! It has been ever since I can remember. I always have a song that's a melody I'm making up, or a song on the radio. Music is a constant for me and it always will be.

You've had so much success. Where would you like to be in 10 years?
I try to live in the moment. It says in the Bible, Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

'Memoirs' Tracklist Revealed, Next Single is Foreigner Cover

Foreigner's Mick Jones can start ordering caviar and Champagne again: Mariah Carey is releasing her own gospel-tinged version of his masterwork song, "I Want to Know What Love Is."

It's the first "real" single from her new album following the summer release of the witty "Obsessed," which is also included on "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel." The album and the single hit the world on Sept. 29th.

I heard the Foreigner song yesterday along with all of "Memoirs" and let me tell you: Mariah's got a hit on her hands along the lines of "Emancipation of Mimi "The hour-long CD is ballad-centric. Written and produced with The Dream and Tricky (I know, but these are their stage names), "Memoirs" boasts a lot of singles. Starting with the Foreigner song is a canny move in these uncertain times. By the time its run is over, a new generation will think "I Want to Know What Love Is" is a Mariah Carey song.

The other songs on the album – these are the titles, although the running order is still being finalized: "Betcha," "Obsessed," "H.A.T.E.U.," "Candy Bling," "Ribbon," "Standing O's.," "Impossible," "It's a Wrap," "Inseparable," "Up Out My Face," "More than Just Friends," and "Angels Cry."

Several of these are radio ready. "Angels Cry" is an honest-to-god ballad a la "Vision of Love," and should be a gigantic success. "Standing O's" also has potential, as do "H.A.T.E.U." – which stands for "having a typical emotional upset" – and "Inseparable."

Def Jam's L.A. Reid – who previewed the CD for the first time yesterday with a clutch of staffers – is playing with the order, to get it right. But he really can't go wrong. Carey's album, is, as they used to say, "what the kids want." Plus, it's got stuff for the slightly older crowd. I loved the doo-woppy "It's a Wrap." And the Foreigner track is so powerful, it's going to be everywhere.

Press Release: Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel

MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL

(June 16, 2009 - New York, NY) First came the emancipation, then came energy and power, and now come MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, the new album by international superstar Mariah Carey, scheduled to arrive on August 25th. The first new single pick from MEMOIRS is "Obsessed," which blasts out to radio today, Tuesday, June 16th. The video for "Obsessed" will be directed by Brett Ratner. "Obsessed" was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are responsible for the majority of tracks on the new album. MEMOIRS was executive-produced by Antonio "L.A." Reid.

MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, the 12th studio album of Mariah's career, is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to her RIAA platinum-selling album E=MC" (released April 15, 2008), and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (released April 12, 2005). Both were Soundscan #1 debut albums that made chart history for Mariah in the U.S. and numerous territories around the globe.

The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemp-orary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. The album debuted at #1 on first week sales of 404,000 copies, Mariah's highest first week sales total (until E=MC"). Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.

Three years later, E=MC" debuted at #1 on first week sales of 463,000 copies, which now stands as the highest first week sales total of Mariah's career. The album's success brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 160 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.

E=MC" spun off four singles: "Touch My Body," "Bye Bye," "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," and "I Stay In Love." Of these, "Touch My Body" made history when it became Mariah's 18th #1 Hot 100 hit, thus surpassing Elvis Presley. "Touch My Body"'s two weeks at the top also marked Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated in Billboard.com. At the same time, Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits.

Exclusive: "Obsessed" Single Cover

Here's an exclusive first look at the official cover of "Obsessed," the lead single from Mariah's upcoming album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel!

"Obsessed" will be transmitted digitally to radio stations today, June 16th, for immediate airplay.

OBSESSED (Lyrics)
(Mariah Carey - C. Tricky Stewart - Terius "The-Dream" Nash)

I was like, "Why are you so obsessed with me?"

So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh

Will the real MC please, step to the mike?

So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh
So oh oh oh oh

All up in the blogs
Saying we met at the bar
When I don't even know who you are
Saying we up in your house
Saying I'm up in your car
But you in LA and I'm out at Jermaine's.
I'm up in the A
You so so lame
and no one here even mentions your name
It must be the weed. It must be the E
Cause you be popping hood
You get it popping, Oh

Why you so obsessed with me (Boy I wanna know)
Lying that you're sexing me (when everybody knows)
It's clear that you're upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn't impress
Last man on the earth still couldn't hit this
You're delusional, you're delusional
Boy you're losing your mind
It's confusing yo, you're confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with your Napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you're bathing in Windex
Boy why you so obsessed with me?

You on your job
You hating hard
Ain't gon' feed you
I'm gonna let you starve
Gasping for air
I'm ventilation
You out of breath
Hope you ain't waiting
Telling the world how much you miss me
But we never were
So why you trippin'
You a mom and pop
I'm a corporation
I'm the press conference
and you a conversation

Why you so obsessed with me (Boy I wanna know)
Lying that you're sexing me (when everybody knows)
It's clear that you're upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn't impress
Last man on the earth still couldn't hit this
You're delusional, you're delusional
Boy you're losing your mind
It's confusing yo, you're confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with your Napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you're bathing in Windex
Boy why you so obsessed with me?

Why you so obsessed with me
Lying that you're sexing me
It's clear that you're upset with me
Finally found a girl that you couldn't impress
Last man on the earth still couldn't hit this
You're delusional, you're delusional
Boy you're losing your mind
It's confusing yo, you're confused you know
Why you wasting your time
Got you all fired up with y our napoleon complex
Seeing right through you like you're bathing in windex

Cast Of "Precious" Arrive @ Cannes Film Festival

The 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival welcomed today director Lee Daniels and cast members of the film Precious including Mariah Carey, Gabourey Sibide, Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton. The film, winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival will play tonight in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival - Un Certain Regard.

Mariah appeared in front of reporters alongside her co-stars in the gritty, urban drama here at Cannes on Friday after a smashing debut at last January's Sundance Film Festival. In the film, she portrays a welfare case worker to a young, overweight teenager, Precious, whose life in the ghetto is hard.

To perform in the part, the glamorous Carey stripped down to her basic self and was required to wear no makeup except that which gave her dark circles under her eyes and made her look weary and worn. Yet Carey said it was among the best work she could have imagined.

"Doing it... was exhausting, exhilarating and it was just an honor," Mariah told reporters at Cannes.

Her director, Lee Daniels, said she plays entirely against type, and watching her perform - along with those of another music star Lenny Kravitz, comedian Mo'Nique and newcomer Gabourey "Gabby" Sidibe" - will be a unique experience for her fans. "Mariah has never played this type before," said Daniels.

The movie came out of Sundance, at that time under a working title called "Push: Based on the novel by Sapphire") with an award and Oscar buzz. U.S. audiences can look for it on November 6, and international audiences will see it as it rolls out country by country.

(Below are early film reviews.)

The New York Post:
[Precious] is heartbreaking. Even the trailer will make you tear up. There's simply no avoiding the emotions. So find the nearest tissue or shirt sleeve and watch the brilliance unfold.

Michael Glitz, The Huffington Post:
[Precious] captures the pugnacious, dreaming, hopeful tone of the book by Sapphire very well and contains a clutch of good performances, including the lead (Gabourey Sidibe), Mariah Carey (!) and especially Mo'Nique as Precious's hateful mother. She's so good it's possible she'll even get an Oscar nomination. I can't wait to see the next film by Daniels. It's called Tennessee and it stars Carey. So there.

Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post:
As Ms. Weiss, Mariah Carey is a linchpin in the story, bearing witness to unspeakable breaches of faith Precious has been forced to endure. Carey's frank, unblinking performance is so free of mannerism and vanity that it literally takes a few moments to realize that it's her on screen. And it's all the more remarkable considering she joined the film's cast only three days before filming.

"I said, just let me kind of peel layers away of who the world thinks I am and even I personally think I am as a performer, and really, truly become this woman, who has a large responsibility," Carey said here today . "In a way, she is the audience, she is that shocked person who hears about what goes on and has to bare her soul because she's hearing something so horrific that she's never heard before." Even with such a daunting role and on such short notice, Carey says, she was confident she could do it. "Because I know that there's a creative side of me that needs to do work like this, and I trust Lee so much that I felt that there was no way we couldn't pull something out we could both be proud of."

Mo'Nique is already being touted as a probable Oscar nominee for her performance as Mary (she couldn't be in Cannes due to commitments to BET and her children, but she taped "Oprah" earlier this week). But with a well-timed release late in the year, "Precious" might bring Carey a nomination, too. It couldn't have escaped either woman's notice that Daniels shepherded Halle Berry to her Oscar win in 2002, for "Monster's Ball."

Elizabeth Renzetti, The Globe and Mail:
Oprah Winfrey is one of the producers of Precious, which is based on the autobiographical novel Push by Sapphire. There's a familiar triumph-through-adversity message and the whole thing does threaten to drown in its own pain, but it's saved by the performances, not least a strong cameo by an almost unrecognizable Mariah Carey, makeup- and diamond-free, as a social worker who's seen it all.

Lee Daniels's PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL "PUSH" BY SAPPHIRE is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want.
